How does it work?

What is glucagon-like peptide 1?

Cells found in the lining of the small intestine (called L-cells) are the major source of glucagon-like peptide 1, although it is also secreted in smaller quantities by the pancreas and the central nervous system. Glucagon-like peptide 1 encourages the release of insulin from the pancreas, increases the volume of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin (beta cells) and holds back glucagon release. Glucagon-like peptide 1 also increases the feeling of fullness during and between meals by acting on appetite centres in the brain and by slowing the emptying of the stomach.

How is glucagon-like peptide 1 controlled?  

Food is the main stimulus of glucagon-like peptide 1 release, with increased hormone levels detectable after 10 minutes of starting to eat and remaining raised in the blood circulation for several hours after that. The hormone somatostatin holds back the production of glucagon-like peptide 1. (Hence, why eating slower makes you feel fuller quicker)

What happens if I have too much glucagon-like peptide 1?

There are no known cases of too much glucagon-like peptide 1. Recently drugs have been developed to mimic glucagon-like peptide 1 in the blood circulation to improve the control of glucose levels in type-2 diabetes. Levels of glucagon-like peptide 1 are also naturally increased after some types of weight-related surgery, which is thought to contribute to the observed weight loss and improvement of type-2 diabetes in these patients.

What happens if I have too little glucagon-like peptide 1?

It has been suggested that too little glucagon-like peptide 1 released after a meal may increase the likelihood of, or worsen, obesity. Since glucagon-like peptide 1 reduces appetite after a meal, if the body releases less of this hormone, individuals may eat more during a meal and are more likely to snack between meals. Dieting, or natural weight loss, is linked to a decrease in glucagon-like peptide 1. The result may be an increased appetite and tendency to regain weight.

What is PROFHILO?

Profhilo is creating a real buzz amongst the practitioners many referring to it "as something they have been waiting for" or as "the most exciting development in injectable treatments in a long time".

Profhilo is the first BDDE-free (1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether, is a viscous liquid) stabilised injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) based product for treating skin laxity. HOW DOES PROFHILO WORK 

As a stabilised product Profhilo lasts in the skin around 28 days. During this time the stimulation of 4 different types of collagen and elastin takes place by slow release of HA. Am I suitable for treatments?

Treatment is not recommended if you are suffering from any skin infection in or near the treatment area or are unwell in any way (even a cold).

Caution

Some over the counter medicines and supplements can also affect bleeding (make you more prone to bruising) as can alcohol- which should be avoided the day before and after treatment.

Treatment Preparation

All make up will need to be removed prior to treatment, so please come ‘fresh faced’ if possible. Alcohol, aspirin, Ibuprofen and a range of dietary supplements including; St. John’s Wort, fish oils, Gingko Biloba, Vitamins C and E- may all contribute to bruising and are best avoided 24 hours before treatment. Treatment cannot be administered if there is an active skin infection, including acne or cold sores or if you are unwell- including colds, coughs, sore throats etc. Contact the clinic to discuss any illness or new medicines prior to attending.

Do not schedule treatment when you have other procedures planned, without first discussing with your clinician. This includes, but is not limited to; massage, facials, dental appointments and surgery

How long will it last?

Longevity does vary between individuals, but results are expected to be gained over a period of 4-6 weeks and last for approximately 6 months. If you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment, your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.

Aftercare Advice

Most people can continue with normal activities. Some will have some redness, pin prick marks. Bruising is possible. The product is injected in small ‘deposits’, you may be able to see them initially, but they settle usually within hours. It may be possible to feel the product where it has been injected under the skin. It will settle, there is no need to massage.

Make-up should not be worn for 12 hours

You are advised to avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 48 hours

Avoid sun bathing, and extremes of heat or cold for 14 days post treatment. Any bruising may take a few days to appear, arnica can be helpful in clearing bruising. It is advisable to avoid aspirin and alcohol for 12-48 hours after treatment.

Tenderness should settle as swelling and bruising goes down.

Step 1: Wash your face and apply eye cream. An eye cream would be able to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. 

Step 2: Wait a few minutes until your skin is completely dry. This is important, because if your skin is at all damp, the retinol will be able to absorb more deeply into your skin and might cause irritation. We want to apply moisturizers and serums to slightly damp skin, but never retinol. 

Step 3: Take a pea-size amount of your retinol and, starting at your chin, apply with your fingertips in upward and outward motions. 

Step 4: Finish with your moisturizer. 

Step 5: Remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen the morning after. 

HOW OFTEN TO APPLY RETINOL?  

Using only a pea-size amount, and to start by applying it to your entire face every other night. Remember that it takes several weeks for your skin to adjust to the product, so it’s best to use it sparingly at first and then gradually increase your use as time goes on. If your skin becomes dry or irritated, stop applying every other night and commence once per week, therefore spacing out applications to use it less frequently. Using retinol can cause side effect – expect redness, drying, flaking and burning or stinging of the skin especially in the first few weeks. It takes time for your skin to adjust, and it also can make you more sensitive to the sun so make sure to wear a daily sunscreen.”
